Materials: Objects and Letters

You can use any letters you already have at home. Or you can print out sets of letters. I own both of the sets linked below. What I like about the two options below is that the consonants are all one color so the child isn’t distracted by various colored sets and the vowels are easily identified with a different color. Multiple lessons can be applied here: clapping syllables, identifying parts of speech, identifying vowels, etc. You could then take this lesson to the next step and have your child write a sentence about some of them or make up a story combining some of the images. (Example: The cat and pig jumped out of the van. I have cat/pig/van as images on my mat hence that sentence).

I have a kindergartener so I’m using this activity with simple 3 and 4 letter words. I am using images from a magnet set that I own, but you could use any image or object you have at home (cup, ball, fork, pen, etc.). I want him to have success independently and to be able to self-check at the end. Therefore, it’s strategic that I have placed the correct letters on the right hand side of his mat. He then knows that all of those letters will get used and if he finds a few remaining then he knows to go back and double check to see where he can place them.
