My dad is a chess enthusiast and my son has been eagerly watching him play for the past few weeks. He expressed wanting to learn and so in my search for a chess board, I came across Story Time Chess. My son immediately took to the game and through the different stories, quickly learned how each piece moved. In observing the lessons that come with this set, my dad was not only impressed at the detail given, but at the quality of the set as well. The story line is organized so even the youngest player can learn chess.
As a reading teacher myself, one of the things that appealed to me was the use of literature as a teaching tool. Story Time Chess is about the adventures in Chesslandia. The children are engaged in the humorous story right from the start. Children learn how to play through reading the story of each chess piece and then given exercises to practice those moves. The story side of the board has characters on it and therefore, my son learned how to set up the board all on his own. After just a few days of playing, he is now using the flip side of the board and setting up the pieces without using the pictures. AMAZING!
I genuinely believe that all children benefit from learning the game of chess. Most young children simply don’t have the patience required to wait for the fun to start happening. Story Time Chess does a great job of capturing their imagination and making the learning very engaging.
